Moving Checklist

8 weeks before

• Give notice to your landlord in writing as your lease requires
• Set a moving budget and get quotes from licensed movers (check USDOT number for interstate moves)
• Start decluttering: sell, donate or recycle what you will not move
• Collect boxes, tape, markers and padding

4 weeks before

• Book your movers or rental truck and confirm the date
• Submit a change of address with USPS
• Schedule utility shut-off at the old place and start-up at the new place
• Update your address with your bank, employer, insurer and DMV
• Buy or transfer renters insurance to the new address

1–2 weeks before

• Pack non-essentials and label boxes by room
• Reserve elevator or loading zone time if your building requires it
• Refill prescriptions and plan pet care for moving day
• Confirm move-in time and key pickup with the new landlord

Moving day

• Pack an essentials box: chargers, toiletries, medications, documents, basic tools
• Photograph or video the old unit after cleaning
• Do a walk-through of the new unit and document existing damage
• Return keys and give your forwarding address for the deposit

After the move

• Unpack the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom first
• Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
• Register to vote at the new address
• Follow up on your security deposit return
