Apartment Lighting Guide: Brighten Any Room Without Rewiring
Lighting can transform an apartment more than almost any piece of furniture. Many rentals rely on a single harsh ceiling fixture per room, which makes spaces feel flat. With lamps, smart bulbs and a few renter-friendly tricks, you can create warm, functional lighting without touching the wiring.
Layer your lighting
Designers often talk about three layers of light:
- Ambient: general light that fills the room, such as ceiling fixtures or floor lamps that bounce light off the ceiling.
- Task: focused light for reading, cooking or working, such as desk lamps and under-cabinet lights.
- Accent: light that highlights art, shelves or plants and adds depth.
Having several light sources at different heights makes a room feel more comfortable and spacious.
Understanding bulbs
Brightness (lumens)
Lumens measure how much light a bulb gives off. Packaging usually lists lumens alongside a comparison to old incandescent wattage.
Color temperature (Kelvin)
Lower Kelvin values produce warm, yellowish light, which many people prefer for living rooms and bedrooms. Higher values produce cooler, bluer light, which some prefer for kitchens and workspaces. Try to keep color temperature consistent within a room.
Color rendering
The Color Rendering Index (CRI) indicates how accurately a light shows colors. Higher CRI bulbs make food, skin tones and decor look more natural.
LED efficiency
LED bulbs use less energy and last longer than incandescent bulbs. The U.S. Department of Energy explains LED lighting benefits.

Room-by-room ideas
Living room
Combine a floor lamp that throws light upward with one or two table lamps. Add a small accent light near a bookshelf or plant. Dimmable bulbs or plug-in dimmers let you adjust the mood.
Bedroom
Bedside lamps or wall-mounted plug-in sconces are better for reading than overhead light. Warm bulbs help create a relaxing atmosphere.
Kitchen
Under-cabinet LED strips or puck lights eliminate shadows on countertops. Battery or plug-in options avoid wiring changes.
Bathroom
If the vanity light casts shadows, a lighted mirror or additional plug-in light can help. Follow safety guidance for anything near water.
Home office
Position a desk lamp to the side opposite your writing hand to reduce shadows, and avoid glare on your screen.
Renter-friendly fixtures
- Plug-in sconces with cord covers that can be painted to match walls
- Swag pendant kits that hang from a ceiling hook and plug into an outlet
- Smart bulbs that change brightness and color from your phone
- Smart plugs to put lamps on schedules
- Shade swaps: replacing an existing fixture’s shade, if easy and allowed
If you want to replace a ceiling fixture, ask your landlord and use a licensed electrician. Keep the original fixture to reinstall.

Make the most of daylight
- Use light, sheer curtains during the day.
- Place mirrors across from or beside windows.
- Keep windows clear of tall furniture.
- Choose light-colored rugs and textiles to reflect light.
Safety basics
- Use bulbs within the fixture’s maximum rating.
- Avoid overloading outlets and power strips.
- Keep cords out of walkways and away from heat sources.
- Look for products certified by a recognized testing laboratory.
